Patiala, November 15, 2013: Thapar University’s 27th annual convocation held
yesterday
marked the
beginning of a new life
for
more than 1,500 students. The university awarded 46 PhDs, 704 postgraduate degrees, three
postgraduate
diplomas
and
768 undergraduate degrees to the students.
The ceremony
was formally inaugurated on the university premises with an address by
Dr KK Raina, Director, Thapar University, where he shared the progress report of the
university and extended his wishes to the students. “We are confident that our students
will be able to meet all the challenges faced by them. Our convocation reflects Thapar
University’s efforts in creating future professionals who will strive
to bring about a positive change around them,” he said.
Mr Gautam Thapar, President of
Thapar University and
Founder and Chairman of
Avantha Group, presided over the
function
and awarded degrees to the toppers of each discipline and students with exemplary performance. During an inspiring address, Mr Thapar said, “The whole world is changing in all the spheres at a mindboggling speed. In
this transformational and disruptive environment, Thapar University
believes that the best gift it can give to its students is the ability to understand this very
basic nature of change so that they are well prepared for the future.”
Thapar
University conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc, Honoris Causa)
on Mr Shekhar Gupta, Editor-in-Chief of The Indian
Express and the chief guest on the occasion. Gupta thanked the university for awarding this degree to him. Congratulating the
passouts, he motivated
them to remain inquisitive throughout their
lives, saying this
would ensure constant
growth of their knowledge. He requested the students
to follow
the
path of truth in whichever
endeavour they undertake.
The occasion also witnessed two students of the university, Vishal and Arshit Gupta,
bagging the President’s Medal
for obtaining the highest cumulative grade point average
(CGPA).
Other key award winners were Smriti Gupta, who was awarded the S Ranbir Singh
Memorial Medal and Vishal Gupta, who added to his tally
of
awards by
bagging the Prof V Rajaraman Computer Science and Engineering Award.
The S Ram Singh Sidhu Memorial Medal
went to Piyush Garg
for
his outstanding
academic performance.
Mr Neeraj Kansal, an
alumnus of the 1988 batch and currently
serving as Secretary, Sports Authority of India, was awarded the Alumnus Award for his dedication to work and making a name for himself both nationally
and
globally. A mechanical
engineer by training, Kansal also served as a faculty at
Thapar University
for three years. He guided
the
students on the parameters which should be kept in mind to excel in their future endeavours
and
encouraged them to develop clarity of vision and make hard work
their second nature.
The concluding address was delivered by Mr SM Trehan, Chairman, Thapar University,
where he congratulated the students who
were conferred degrees. He said, “Thapar University has constantly
added value by
incorporating the best business and technical
practices and philosophies to bridge the gap between education through books
and
the practical realities
of
the outside world so that the students
are fully equipped
to deliver their best.”
